I Brake for Rock Springs Pie

Advice from locals is usually a good bet. We were visiting an old high school friend who has lived in Arizona for well over 10 years, and we told her we were going to Sedona the next day. Her eyes widened as she said,” You HAVE to get a pie from Rock Springs Cafe. It’s the best!” We googled their website and found lemon merengue pie, chocolate cream pie, apple crumb pie, coconut cream pie, mixed berry pie, blueberry pie, rhubarb pie, Jack Daniels Pecan pie………the list goes on. Are you salivating? We were.

Our early morning drive from Scottsdale to Sedona on I-17 took us right past exit 242 for Black Canyon City. Rock Springs Cafe didn’t look like much of a place, but we made a mental note to stop by on the way back to Scottsdale that night.

Bell Rock in Sedona

We arrived in Sedona as the sun hit Bell Rock perfectly. A morning hike, lunch in town, and an afternoon hike, and we were hankerin for some pie!

There’s not much to see along I-17, so we talked about pie. Rock Springs Cafe has special order pies, but they must be ordered 2 days in advance. We were wingin it and hoping for a great selection. Exit 242 couldn’t come soon enough, and we were counting down the exit signs. Finally, the sign, the right hand exit, and we coasted into the parking lot. The car was barely in park before we jumped out and sprang through the rustic doors of the sweet dessert temple.

Inside, the counter display cases housed gorgeous merengue pies and pastries, and along the back wall were multiple refrigerator cases of berry crumb pies. Every which way I turned, massive banana cream, lemon merengue, cherry crumb, and blackberry pies all begged me to take them home. It was a hard decision, but we finally cradled our two choices of mixed berry crumb and rhubarb pies, paid for them (they’re not cheap), and placed them carefully in the car for our ride back to the resort.

The sweet mixed berry and tart rhubarb pies were delicious! Tons of rich fruity goodness and plenty of sugar. This was just our first visit. On our second trip to Scottsdale, we made sure to stop by Rock Springs Cafe again for what will be a must whenever we are in town! This time it was blackberry.

Rock Springs Cafe does do more than just pies. They also serve breakfast, BBQ and burgers, but for the last 30 years, it’s the pies that have made it world famous!
