Some of our best, and worst, travel moments happen on the road. Whether it’s a three hour drive or a cross country journey, something is bound to happen that sticks in your memory forever and makes you smile at the absurdity or pure joy of the situation. Here are a few of my stand-out moments (in no particular order) as I criss-crossed America and other parts of the world with friends, family, and of course, dogs.
#1- Vineyard hopping in Napa and Sonoma with Tom. He is the ultimate wine expert and took me to some very beautiful (and delicious) wineries. We even received a bit of VIP treatment with special vintages, private tours and overnight accommadations at a few wineries.
#2- Trip to New Orleans with my Mom. We were walking my two dogs, Jazz and Hudson down a cute street with cafes and and galleries. A pigeon flew in front of the dogs and into a café. Jazz pulled the leash out of my hand and dashed after it weaving through the tables. My mom just walked away like she didn’t know us.
#3- Birthday weekend road trip from Anchorage to Denali National Park. A 6 hour drive turned into 9 hours. Rainbows and glaciers kept distracting us.
#4- Getting a flat tire driving from Puerto Plata to Santiago, Dominican Republic on Christmas Eve. I wanted to see Christmas lights, so we headed to the “big” city. We hit a hole (not a pothole, an actual see-through hole in the bridge) and blew out the tire. We had to hitch a ride back with our flat tire and a family of 6 to get the other car then return to fix the broken car. Our 1 hour drive turned into a 14 hour ordeal.
#5- Remembering to drive on the left hand side of the road from Sydney to Melbourne through the little beach towns. Bonuses along the way: flocks of galahs and sulphur crested cockatoos feasting on insects along the grassy shoulders.
#6- In college, a 24 hour drive from Florida to Boston with 6 guys from the crew team in a van. Interesting what guys talk about, and apparently they’re fine peeing in a Gatorade bottle. I am not.
#7- My dad picking a tick off my bum in Tennessee while moving cross country from Florida to Denver. Not my finest moment.
#8- My best friend, Christy, and I driving from Denver to Vail for the weekend in tank tops and shorts with the windows down. An hour later, windows were up and sweatshirts were on. It snowed that night. The first snow either of my dogs had ever seen. Hudson loved it, Jazz ate it.
#9- My friend, Nicole, and I returning from Miami driving 45 mph on I-95 eating a white chocolate raspberry truffle cheesecake. Dark storm clouds were rolling in, but we couldn’t be happier with our cheesecake. We waved at everyone passing us.
And #10- Driving the Great Ocean Road in Australia. I hadn’t planned to see this, but I’m glad I took the time to do it. Australia is a very friendly and inviting country, but the southern coast is a stark contrast with its violent ocean and unpredictable weather slowly disintergrating the limestone rocks.
